A profile of Rich Lehmann, wedding photographer and owner of The Other Day Photography in Kent.
The Other Day Photography is a wedding photography company based in Kent and run by Rich Lehmann.
After a couple of years shooting family portraits and the occasional pet, Rich started photographing weddings in 2004 and hasn't looked back since. Rich came up with the name The Other Day as he wanted a name that captured the feeling of looking at a photo of a child decades later and having the memories brought back fresh as if the moment had occurred only days before. When he made the transition to photographing weddings, the name stayed as Rich would still apply the same laid back ethos to his wedding photography as he did to portraits.
Don't be fooled by Rich's laid back demeanour though. He treats every wedding with the utmost importance and is thoroughly professional in every aspect of his job, from resarching forthcoming venues (making dummy runs to find the best route between the wedding and reception locations) through to using highly respected album manufacturers and owning the best reviewed cameras and lenses in the business.
At weddings, Rich prefers to work primarily in a reportage style, taking candid and unposed photos of the bride, the groom and their guests enjoying the wedding day. Obviously he will always make time to allow for the taking of the necessary group shots for the wedding album, but most of his customers are keen simply to let Rich blend into the background at a wedding and work his magic, putting their faith into his experience and knowing that he will get the shots that really capture their wedding day.
The origin of Rich's style goes back to a photography exhibition he saw in 1997 of works by the documentary photographer Martin Parr. Rich had always been interested in photography, but after seeing Martin Parr's work his eyes were opened to a new way of taking photographs and his interest was taken to a new level.
Through the early 2000s, Rich invested in more and more equipment and, with the spread of the internet, he started to post his work online. A few awards and competition wins later and Rich decided that perhaps he had what it took to leave his customer service job and become a full time professional photographer. His office based career having provided him with ten years of useful experience in knowing how to keep customers happy.
Rich shoots his weddings with a Canon EOS 5D MkII camera. Canon are widely regarded to be the leaders in the field of digital SLR cameras and their cameras take fantastic photos, with both vivid colours and striking black and white images being easy to achieve.
Rich has worked at dozens of venues across Kent and the South East now. His favourites are the ones that manage to bring a complete package of customer satisfaction to each and every one of their customers. Most noteworthy are Cooling Castle Barns, near Rochester, The Old Kent Barn near Swingfield, Turkey Mill near Maidstone and The Spa Hotel in Tunbridge Wells. All of these venues provide beautiful buildings, stunning gardens AND helpful, friendly staff to ensure that your wedding will run smoothly.
